WHY WE STARTED KOALAFLAGE

G’day. I’m Matti. I grew up on the east coast of Australia, the only place koalas naturally exist in the wild. And honestly, that fact has started to feel uncomfortable… because every time I come back home, I notice more bushland gone. More clearing. More roads. More “progress.” And less space for koalas to actually live. Koalas don’t disappear all at once. It’s slow. Habitat gets chopped up, bushfires hit harder, cars and dogs become a bigger risk, and suddenly they’re just… not around like they used to be. A lot of people don’t even realize how serious it’s getting.

I’ve always loved koalas. They were part of my childhood. And I’ve always loved making art. Designs, patterns, visuals, whatever I can get lost in. So once this started bugging me, I couldn’t switch it off. Koalas need our help right now. This is our chance to stop them from sliding toward extinction, and it’s honestly heartbreaking seeing what’s happened to them in recent years. The habitat loss, the fires, everything stacking up. I don’t want a future where koalas are something people only talk about in the past tense.

How Koalaflage Started

I love Australia most, it’ll always be home, but I’ve also fallen in love with Canada. The people, the wild nature, the adventures… it’s a special place. I’ve spent a lot of time bouncing between both countries, and honestly I just love exploring the world in general, seeing how other people live, getting outside, meeting good humans, learning new perspectives. And that’s where I met my canadian mate“puds.”

I used to rant to him nonstop about koalas, how they only exist in one country, how fast habitat is disappearing, how people outside Australia don’t even realize it’s happening. He was genuinely interested but at some point we realized that talking about it was good… but it wasn’t enough. So what if we made a clothing company that helps the koalas, something that starts conversations naturally? That’s where the whole Koalaflage idea came from, and the rest is history.

Why Koalaflage Exists

Koalaflage exists to help koalas, full stop. We make koala-inspired designs together, we build drops around the message, and we’re trying to grow a community of people who actually care and want to help. Not in a performative way, in a real way. If Koalaflage gets more people talking, sharing, learning, and caring, that matters. And if more people care, more action happens. That’s how real conservation support grows.

The Pattern Is the Point

Koalas are basically disappearing in plain sight. So we wanted to make a camo-style pattern with koalas hidden inside it, not just to look cool, but because it represents what’s happening. People see it. They ask what it is. And then you get a chance to talk about koalas, habitat, and what’s going on. That’s the whole goal: start the conversation.

If You’re Here, You’re Part of It

If you’ve ever loved koalas, or you’ve ever felt that “how is nobody talking about this?” feeling welcome. That’s exactly why this exists. Koalaflage is just a way to keep the conversation alive, and turn that awareness into real help for koalas. Thanks for being here.
